The contract: Freelance quarterly line editing of magazine features and departments. The Associate Editor’s services will comprise approximately 60-100 hours per quarter. The publisher will require the Associate Editor to provide a set fee for each quarter’s services, contract with our custom publisher, and begin work by the last week of January 2006.
The publisher: Cisco Systems. We seek a strong associate editor for iQ Magazine, our B-to-B print and online publication for business decision makers around the world at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) with up to 1500 employees.
We require that our Associate Editor be an experienced professional business journalist whose talents include developing articles that are engaging, concise, and informative for business people. In addition, we prefer that you have experience writing or editing articles on SMB business issues or IP networking (wireless or wireline, data or voice). If you are not already highly knowledgeable about IP networking or SMB business issues, you must perform immediate and ongoing self-learning.
Location: Associate Editor can work remotely from any suitable location. iQ Magazine content is created by a virtual editorial team of editors, writers, and artists who are located throughout the United States. The publication is headquartered physically in San Jose, CA.
iQ Magazine is a print and online publication that helps SMBs learn how they can use technology to increase productivity, improve communication, streamline operations, and address market opportunities. Its editorial content identifies challenges facing these companies and the technologies to help solve them, using real-world case studies and business strategies to help readers make sound technology investment decisions. Responsibilities: The Associate Editor is responsible for the line editing of 10 articles (4 features and 6 departments) for each quarterly issue, using MS Word and its Track Changes tools. The Associate Editor reports to the Managing Editor, and will provide the following services on a schedule that is consistent with the magazine issue schedule:
• In the initial quarter contract, the Associate Editor will be responsible for the first line edits, ensuring that each manuscript meets professional standards and the specifications of the assignment, and completing or editing article elements such as heads, sidebars (including From Cisco sidebar), infographics, charts, and text boxes.
• For subsequent contracts, the Associate Editor’s responsibility will expand to also include editing and/or developing the second and final drafts, addressing review comments, copy edits, and fact checks, and completing or updating article elements as described above.
• The Associate Editor will attend or report to weekly status meetings.
